The two door knob locks in your home will not only lock your doors, but can also prevent you from unlocking them by putting a pin or bolt through the door, according to an official from the Department of Homeland Security.
In a statement, DHS explained that the two-door lock, known as a “door knob lock,” works by using two pins to attach a locking mechanism to the door handle.
It can be used to protect your home from intruders and burglars, according the DHS official, who added that it is “designed to be used in conjunction with the door knob.”DHS said that it was working on new technologies to address the issue, which would include installing additional hardware in the door that would block access to your lock, but said it was still early in the process.
A spokesperson for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which oversees the standards used to make the locks, told CNNMoney that the agency had no specific information on the issue at this time.
But he noted that the NIST standards do not specify that the doors must be locked.
“While the NISTS’ Standards for Door Knob Security are designed to protect doors and locks, it is the individual homeowner’s choice to use or not to use the lock,” the spokesperson said.
“The NISDS standard states that the door to the lock must be completely open to prevent the lock from being released.”
While the DHS officials say the two doors will not lock, there are still other ways to prevent them from being unlocked.
One is to use a metal ring that can be attached to the front door knob, which will prevent the locking mechanism from being pulled out.
Another is to install a locking device that is designed to keep the lock locked, but that is not required.
