A father who wants to keep his two children inside when they go to school has found a clever way to make it work: He’ll chain a door lock on the outside and lock the children inside.
It is a unique idea that can be used for a variety of reasons, but the dad who first proposed it has a message for parents: It works.
“This is really something that has been done before, and the kids have never been outside of it,” John said.
The idea is simple: John is a licensed locksmith who specializes in locking children’s bedrooms and bathrooms, but he’s also an avid father.
“It’s like a baby car seat, you can put a child in it,” he said.
“And you can lock the door with the car seat in the front and the child in the back.”
John’s father had to put a safety belt on the door while they were driving to and from work last summer.
“When you are driving down the highway, you have to make sure that you don’t fall asleep on the brakes,” John explained.
“I think if you are a parent who does it everyday, you know how much it affects your kids.”
John said the concept has been a big success, and he’s been able to lock children’s doors and drive the kids to school.
“They are in their car seat and they have their car keys with them,” he explained.
John said it was a good way to keep kids safe and keep them from getting hurt in the car while driving, and it’s also the easiest way to lock a child’s car seat.
“You can’t lock a car seat with a child, and that is why I decided to go ahead and do this,” he continued.
John and his daughter, Amanda, both had their first day at school last Friday.
“We did everything right, and we were able to go to class safely,” Amanda said.
John’s daughter, who is about to start kindergarten, is a student at the nearby Central School District, and Amanda is studying at the high school.
The family decided to try the lock on Friday afternoon after seeing the lock up at their local locksmith store.
“So I went to the locksmith and they said they could give me a little lock to go with it,” Amanda recalled.
“He said, ‘You have to be careful, because this is a locked door, it’s not really going to open.'”
She said she’s already locked the door and the carseat, but that she is not sure if the lock will work.
“But we can lock it and it will, but we don’t know if it’s going to work,” Amanda added.
John plans to use the lock at home.
“At home, I’ll be putting a padlock on it and putting a big safety pin in there, and I’ll put the lock in there.”
Because it’s a lock, it’ll not open,” he added.
The locksmith told ABC News the lock can be easily installed, and they don’t charge a lot for the lock.
