Auckland, New Zealand, has the second-highest number of birds in captivity, behind Adelaide.
However, the parrots are being kept in isolation in the city’s largest bird sanctuary, the Sydney Bird Sanctuary, after being reported missing for over a month.
“They have been locked up for months,” said bird conservationist and author Rebecca Hickey.
“The birds are locked up there and the people that are responsible are not really aware of the fact that they’re being locked up.”
“They don’t know what to do about it.”
“I’ve been locked in for months and it is a really strange situation,” said Hickey, who has been working in the sanctuary for the past four years.
“There are so many birds locked up and it’s just not good for the birds to be kept in this state of isolation.”
“We’re seeing a large number of the parrot species locked up with us,” she said.
“It’s a bit worrying.”
The Sydney Bird Rescue Centre, which has around 100 birds, has been using “lock-down” methods to keep the parakeets out of the sanctuary.
“We have a number of lockdowns and we’ve put in more than 200 lockdowns,” said shelter manager Jennifer Brown.
“I have seen a large rise in birds coming in that have been found dead.”
“It has been really, really challenging to get a good lock down to get the birds out of there.”
“People are very much aware of that there are a lot of birds locked away,” said Brown.
Birds have been kept in lockdown for months at the Sydney Sanctuary, where some have been dead for months The shelter also uses “bird-nest” enclosures to keep birds out.
“One of the most common problems we have with birds in the bird sanctuary is the birds don’t come out,” said rescue centre volunteer Rebecca Hough.
“You can get a lot more birds out if they’re in a nest box,” she told the ABC.
The shelter is now using “bird cage” enclosing methods to help keep birds in isolation. “
With the bird-nesting system, we’ve made it so the birds are actually able to come out and we’re keeping them in the nest box until we can put them back in the cage.”
The shelter is now using “bird cage” enclosing methods to help keep birds in isolation.
“Every time we have a bird that has been released, we bring them into the cage,” said volunteer Rebecca Brown.
She said she had seen a number that were not allowed to leave.
“This is a huge problem for the community,” she added.
“If we were going to put them in an outdoor cage, they would have been able to walk away.”
The Australian Parrot Society is also working to ensure that the parakers are kept out of isolation.
The society said it would consider placing the birds into the bird cage.
“Unfortunately the Parrot Sanctuary is not able to safely keep parrots in the Bird Cage, due to the need for them to be monitored regularly,” the society said in a statement.
“To this end we have put in place a number in the Birds Nest, which we hope will be able to keep parakeet birds out, as long as they are monitored and vaccinated.”
