Renault has introduced a new generation in electric vehicles, a hybrid electric sports car called the RSP-X.
It’s the first time in 25 years that a sports car has been powered by an electric motor.
It uses a turbocharged V8 engine to produce more power, compared with the traditional petrol engines that make up most of today’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars.
Renault said the R SP-X has a top speed of 300km/h, but the company is keen to see what this car can do in real-world driving.
“I’m really excited about this vehicle, it’s very unique and exciting to me,” said Renault’s CEO, Bruno de la Roux.
The RSP, or “sporty sports car”, is built on a new platform that is different from previous models, with the electric motors powering the car.
This means it’s not only a sports model, but a sporty hybrid car as well.
“This is a sportier sports car, and that’s what we’re trying to do,” said de la Roque.
The car uses a rear-mounted electric motor, which generates 500 horsepower.
The engine is connected to the rear wheel by a 6-speed gearbox and a battery pack, with a range of up to 300 kilometres.
Renault says the car can accelerate from 0 to 100km/hr in 3.2 seconds, and can travel from 0-60mph in 5.2sec.
“It’s a great car,” said former Formula One champion Fernando Alonso.
“We want to see how far we can go, what kind of things can be done with this, how it can be used for training and race day, and of course the future of racing.”
Renault has been experimenting with electric motors for years, and has introduced many more in the past few years.
It was the first car to have electric motors and also had hybrid electric motors.
“Renault wants to see electric motors in all the cars that we are designing, so that we can bring them to the next level,” said CEO Bruno de La Roux at a press conference on Monday.
The electric motors, which Renault says can reach 300kW, can generate up to 600kW and have a top speeds of 300kph.
“With the introduction of the electric engine, the RSPA-X can go from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 3 seconds and can reach 200 kilometres per day,” said De la Rouz.
“In the future, Renault will build a whole new generation, new electric cars, that will be able to go from 0 – 100 kilometres in the same time,” he said.
Renault is planning a range for the R-SP that will exceed 300 kilometres, with its current range being around 120km.
Renault has developed the technology in-house, but it’s been hard to get the car to the race track.
Renault did announce a new range of the RTS-X last month, but only with a limited run of 1,000 units.
“If you have a team that can get 500 units, and if they have the technology to deliver them, and we can get them on track, it can work,” said Mr de la Rooque.
“And I think that is going to happen, and the team is going, they’re going to build the best cars.”
He said Renault had a strong partnership with the Formula E championship, and will be bringing more teams to the sport.
“As soon as the cars are on the track, the teams will start racing them,” he added.
“They’re going from the test track to the grid.
